The Eminem verse in "Renegade" was the biggest departure for the album - I like Eminem (though certainly not as much as I used to) but it was kind of a jarring shift from the style of the rest of the album. This is mostly your fault.)Īs for "The Blueprint" - just as I was getting tired of it, finding it a bit repetitive, in comes the funk, then some soul, then the "ain't no love in the heart of the city" sample. There is still good rap and hip hop today, but it doesn't get the attention that far inferior tracks and styles get. He carried the legacy of 90s rap into the 21st century, and those attempting to reach those heights in the last decade (Kanye, Kendrick, Chance, all making great music) are more polarizing in both style and personality. Jay-Z's might be the last great crossover megastar of good mainstream rap music. Sure, they were inappropriate for a soccer game crowd that included their younger siblings. The same principle applies here, but this one is elevated by fantastic production, especially from the young Chicago phenom named Kanye West-that guy's going places. I tend to prefer him as a feature, as I just don't think his style is dynamic enough to hold my interest for an album's length. Ultimately, both Jay-Z and Eminem use the hook to say that, while they may face public disapproval for different reasons, they will not change their behavior and have "never been afraid to talk about anything". Both of his verses are to state that Eminem and he are liable to kill if the need is felt. Eminem sees this outcry as hypocritical, claiming that these parents are using him as a "media scapegoat" to deflect attention away from their own shortcomings as parents. His references to drug use and religion caused many parents to publicly denounce his music. At the time, Eminem was at the center of many criticisms due to the content of his lyrics. On the other hand, Eminem deals with the public perception of his music. He accuses these critics of simply "skimming" through his music, instead of listening thoroughly. Thus, he dismisses critics who lump him together with artists who only rap about " jewels". Jay-Z argues that his music is the product of his rough upbringing, and that it speaks to others going through the same problems. He states his demeanor was "30 years senior," implying that hardships he faced during his childhood forced him to grow up and make adult decisions from a young age. Jay-Z's two verses deal with his fatherless childhood, and how financial difficulties faced by his mother forced him to sell drugs for survival (thus becoming a renegade to society). The song has different meanings to both artists.

Rapper The Game made reference to the Nas verse on Ether, on his own song with Eminem, "We Ain't", in satire by stating "Lo, get Dre on the phone quick Nas and Jay-Z had both contributed to the soundtrack of Eminem's 2002 film 8 Mile, with Nas' contribution, "U Wanna Be Me", being a diss towards Jay-Z.
Years later Jay admitted the Nas claim in " A Star Is Born". Nas says to Jay-Z that "Eminem murdered you on your own shit " stating that he felt Eminem outperformed Jay-Z on Jay's own song. The song is referenced by rapper Nas on his famous diss song " Ether" made during their highly publicized feud.
